Ukraine plans intergovernmental conference on EU accession, Zelenskyy says
Ukraine is counting on holding the first intergovernmental conference as early as this spring, according to a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Ukrainian president greeted the start of substantial preparations for negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU today. He announced that the official screening process had commenced in Brussels, laying the groundwork for negotiations.
According to the president, ahead lies meticulous work to assess the compatibility of Ukrainian legislation with EU standards, the formation of the Ukrainian delegation, and the negotiation position.
"I count on the maximum mobilization of the government team and the holding of the first intergovernmental conference as early as this spring," said Zelenskyy.
Ukraine's accession negotiations with the EU
On November 8, 2023, the European Commission recommended to the European Council to start negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, noted that Kyiv had fulfilled 90% of the necessary reforms to start negotiations.
The European Commission may provide an assessment of Ukraine's progress in implementing Eurointegration reforms necessary for EU accession at the end of winter. The beginning of negotiations on the country's future EU membership will depend on this assessment.
Today, the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, Olha Stefanishyna, stated that the process of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union had already effectively begun.
