Europe needs security guarantees from Ukraine, and now is a "historic momentum" to integrate it into the European Union and NATO, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.

According to him, the integration of Ukraine into the European Union and NATO will become a security guarantee both for it and for all of Europe.

"And if we're talking about really working security guarantees, it must be the membership of NATO or something similar, because it's not only about us to give security guarantees to Ukraine, but also our region needs security guarantees from Ukraine, because Ukraine is now the largest and most efficient, experienced force in our region," the Estonian minister said.

Tsahkna noted that the decision to leave Ukraine in a gray zone will allow Russia to continue its aggression on the European continent.

"So we need to see it together because these gray areas, or neutral countries, or buffer zones. However, we call them, there is just a green light for Putin to continue further aggression towards Europe, we need to understand that this is our opportunity as well," he added.

The Estonian minister noted that Ukraine is now fighting not only for itself and its freedom, but also giving Europe time to build its security structure.

Date of Ukraine's accession to the European Union

Earlier, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that the Ukrainian authorities will do everything to ensure that the country is ready to join the European Union by 2027.

At the same time, Kyiv called on Brussels to set January 1, 2027, as the date of Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

At the same time, last week, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that Ukraine's accession to the European Union on January 1, 2027, is impossible. According to her, the membership process depends on two specific things: achieving peace and carrying out reforms.
