Ukrainian drones that fell on Finland's territory were not directed toward the country. Most likely cause of the incident is the impact of Russian electronic warfare systems, said a spokesperson of Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heorhii Tykhyi.
What Tykhyi said
He emphasized that Ukraine and Finland are in constant communication regarding this incident, and the Ukrainian side has already provided all necessary information to clarify the circumstances.
"We can state with certainty that no Ukrainian drones were directed toward Finland under any circumstances. Most likely cause is deviation caused by Russian electronic warfare systems," Tykhyi said.
According to him, Ukraine also apologized to the Finnish side for this incident.
"In general, we share a belief with our Finnish friends that the cause of both this incident and overall security challenges in our region is Russian aggression against Ukraine," he added.
Zelenskyy's reaction
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he discussed the situation with President of Finland Alexander Stubb.
"Of course, we mentioned the drone incident that recently occurred in the territory of Finland. Alexander and I see this situation in the same way. We are providing all necessary information. Thank you!" Zelenskyy said.
What preceded
On the morning of March 29, several slow-moving low-flying objects were spotted in the maritime zone and in the southeast of Finland. Two of them turned out to be Ukrainian drones, which fell on the territory of the country.
Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo confirmed that drones that entered the territory of the state likely have a Ukrainian origin.
According to the Air Force, one of them was identified as a long-range strike drone An-196 Liutyi, while the type of the other could not be determined.
No one was injured as a result of the incident.
