Ukraine lost eastern territories due to aid delay by Congress - White House
Due to months-long delays in approving aid to Ukraine in the US Congress, Kyiv lost part of its territory in the east of the country, including Avdiivka, states US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
Due to the delay in American aid, Ukraine was forced to economize on ammunition, resulting in the loss of territories, he said.
"And while today's announcement is very good news for Ukraine, they are still under serious pressure on the battlefield, and it is certainly possible that Russia could make additional tactical gains in the coming weeks," Sullivan said.
"The fact is that it's going to take some time for us to dig out of the hole that was created by six months of delay before the Congress passe the supplemental," Biden's advisor added.
At the same time, according to him, the Ukrainian troops, awaiting aid from the US, were able to inflict significant losses on Russia. Since the beginning of 2024, according to the American government's estimates, Ukraine has destroyed over 700 Russian armored vehicles and approximately 250 Russian tanks, meanwhile, Russia continues to send its soldiers into battle without proper training and equipment.
US aid to Ukraine
For nearly six months, the US Congress could not approve a new $62 billion aid package for Ukraine.
Russian army began an offensive on Avdiivka in early October 2023. In mid-February, the Ukrainian command decided to withdraw from Avdiivka to avoid being surrounded by the enemy.
Last week, the US House of Representatives approved a bill to fund aid to Ukraine. On April 24, it was supported in the Senate and signed by President Joe Biden.
