President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy states in an interview with Irish blogger Caolan Robertson that the US's request for Ukraine's assistance in the Middle East indicates that Kyiv has leverage.
During the conversation, the host notes that the US had turned to Ukraine for help in the Middle East, rather than France or Germany. Moreover, Washington rejected the proposal to use a British aircraft carrier.
For this reason, Robertson asks Zelenskyy how he feels.
"Good feeling. Now it's because of our soldiers, great people, and a lot of different production, which we increased from the very beginning of the war. Now we have the high level," the President replies.
When asked whether Ukraine now has cards, the head of state says that they had them before, but Kyiv did not show them.
" Yeah. I think yes. But I think that we had, you know, it's like a good player. So you can have good cards, but it's not important to show everybody that you have these cards. I think that one year ago, I also had it, but we didn't show it, but now everybody understands that we have," Zelenskyy emphasizes.
Trump was wrong about cards
On February 28, 2025, a quarrel broke out in the White House between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"You're right now not in a very good position. You don't have the cards right now with us, you start having problems right now," the US President said at the time.
Throughout 2025 and early 2026, Trump repeatedly said that Zelenskyy did not have any real cards in the negotiations. He claimed that he was the only one who had them.
In this way, the US tried to pressure Ukraine into agreeing to virtually any peace deal.
However, on February 28, 2026, the US and Israel launched an operation against Iran, which was met with a barrage of Iranian Shahed drones and missiles. To neutralize the drones, countries began using expensive missiles, but shooting them down was not always successful.
For this reason, the US asked Ukraine for help, and Kyiv has already sent specialists to the Middle East.
