Ukraine elected to key UN Economic and Social Council, Ukraine's FM calls it 'an honor' Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha (Vitalii Nosach, RBC-Ukraine)

Ukraine has been elected in the first round as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2026–2028 term, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced.

"We are grateful for the trust and support. It is a great honor for Ukraine to join one of the UN's principal bodies that promotes global cooperation in development, human rights, and humanitarian response. These areas align with the goals and principles of the UN Charter," said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

He noted that Ukraine would actively, constructively, and in a spirit of partnership contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, while also working to strengthen solidarity and build a more inclusive, fair, and resilient world for all.

"Congratulations to all elected member states who uphold the UN Charter and reject any attempts to undermine international law. We look forward to close cooperation in defending shared values and achieving meaningful progress," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized.

Ukraine last served on ECOSOC from 2019 to 2021.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six main organs of the UN. It coordinates the economic, social, and humanitarian work of the UN and its specialized agencies. The council consists of 54 member states elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms, ensuring geographic balance and representation from all regions.

ECOSOC serves as a platform for discussing global socio-economic issues and develops recommendations on development, human rights, health, education, gender equality, and climate change. It also oversees international development efforts, approves agency budgets, and works with NGOs. ECOSOC plays a key role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through annual forums and progress reviews toward the 2030 agenda.

Earlier, it was reported that the UN refugee agency was forced to reduce aid to Ukrainians evacuated from frontline areas, partly due to cuts in US support.
