Ukraine develops new armored vehicles for radiation reconnaissance

Ukraine’s National Guard has received the first Tisa armored vehicles designed for radiation and chemical reconnaissance, replacing outdated Soviet-era UAZ-469RKhB vehicles, according to National Guard Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko.
What has changed
The UAZ-469RKhB was developed in the 1980s based on a civilian off-road vehicle and did not provide sufficient protection for its crew.
In addition, the equipment installed on the vehicle was not capable of fully detecting and monitoring modern radiation and chemical threats.
The new system was developed according to technical requirements set by the National Guard. It allows crews to survey hazardous areas without leaving the vehicle and transmit the collected data to commanders in real time.
New system's equipment
The vehicle is equipped with radiation and chemical reconnaissance instruments, an automated data collection and processing system, a weather station, modern communications equipment and satellite navigation.
It also features night-vision, ventilation and air-filtration systems.
The armored vehicle is based on the Toyota LC79 and meets the NATO STANAG 4569 protection standard, which provides ballistic and mine protection.
Role of NBC protection units
Radiation, chemical and biological protection units are responsible for promptly detecting hazardous substances, assessing the extent of contamination, monitoring the situation and transmitting information to commanders.
The National Guard says the modernization of its equipment will improve the safety of service members and the effectiveness of these units in combat conditions.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that amid the widespread use of FPV strike drones, Ukrainian forces have been adapting vehicle protection by using mesh cages, additional protective structures, camouflage and other unconventional engineering solutions to reduce the vulnerability of vehicles to drone attacks.
