Ukraine confirms captivity of over 2,500 servicemen using OSINT

Ukrainian specialists are using OSINT technologies to verify the captivity of servicemen. Using this method, they discovered that more than 2,500 defenders have been taken prisoner, states the Commissioner for Persons Missing under Special Circumstances, Artur Dobroserdov, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine on Telegram.
At a meeting with representatives of the OSCE Moscow Mechanism’s independent expert mission, Dobroserdov stated that the overall goal is to bring every Ukrainian home, noting that prisoners of war retain the status of missing persons until their return.
He noted that OSINT methods (Open Source Intelligence) are being applied, through which the captivity of 2,577 servicemen has been confirmed.
At the same time, information regarding 680 people, including 91 civilians, has not yet been confirmed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
There have also been eight cases in which individuals identified as prisoners were later found among the deceased. For six of them, the ICRC has still not confirmed their captivity.
Independent OSCE experts are expected to release a report at the end of September on Russia’s violations of OSCE commitments, as well as abuses and human rights violations.
Prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia
The Ukrainian and Russian delegations agreed on large-scale prisoner exchanges during several meetings in Istanbul.
As of July 24, the head of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry's Defense Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that more than a thousand defenders had been returned to Ukraine under these agreements.
