Ukraine has repeatedly proven that it can surprise, and performances from past years at the world-famous Eurovision Song Contest are further proof of this. Ukrainian artists have delivered powerful numbers that have remained memorable for millions of viewers for years.

RBC-Ukraine recalls the performances that helped shape Ukraine’s reputation as one of the strongest countries at Eurovision.

Ruslana, “Wild Dances” (2004)

Ruslana brought Ukraine its first victory at the Eurovision Song Contest. Her performance of “Wild Dances” became a real explosion on stage, as the powerful energy of the singer and her team, Hutsul motifs, an unusual staging, and intense drive immediately made the act stand out among other contestants.

In those years, the song and dance looked not only fresh but also quite unconventional, which helped Europe see Ukraine from a different perspective — as a vibrant and unique country. To this day, the performance is considered one of the best in the entire history of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Verka Serduchka, “Dancing Lasha Tumbai” (2007)

The performance by the original and charismatic Verka Serduchka immediately caused a sensation at Eurovision. The stage was filled with glitter, movement, and humor, and the overall presentation felt fun and effortless, which appealed not only to viewers but also to the jury.

The act quickly became memorable, and the song began to be played on music platforms around the world, gaining popularity not only in Ukraine but far beyond its borders.

It is important to note that in 2007, Serduchka did not take first place — she finished second. However, many people still consider this performance one of the most outstanding in the history of the contest.

Serduchka proved that an unconventional approach can win over all of Europe.

Jamala, “1944” (2016)

The performance by Jamala differs significantly from other Ukrainian Eurovision entries. There were no bright special effects or large-scale show elements, but the emotional delivery received the highest recognition. The song “1944” told the world about the tragic events in the history of the Crimean Tatar people.

It was a performance that captivated from the very first seconds: sincerity, powerful vocals, and an important message helped Ukraine secure another victory. For many, it remains one of the strongest acts in the history of the contest.

Zlata Ognevich, “Gravity” (2013)

The performance by Zlata Ognevich at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest is still considered one of Ukraine’s most powerful and emotional entries.

At the time, her song “Gravity” stood out not only for its strong vocals but also for its fairytale-like staging, which was widely described as deeply moving and atmospheric.

A special atmosphere was created by the singer’s appearance on stage together with the giant Igor Vovkovinskiy, which became one of the most recognizable moments.

For many, this remains one of Ukraine’s Eurovision performances that still deeply moves audiences today.

Kalush Orchestra, “Stefania” (2022)

The song “Stefania” performed by Kalush Orchestra at the Eurovision Song Contest sounded especially powerful against the backdrop of the full-scale war.

At the same time, the performance was perceived not just as a musical act, but as a symbol of support for Ukraine.

The final words from the stage about the need to help Mariupol and “Azovstal” then went around the world and triggered a powerful reaction from viewers.

The group’s victory became very important for Ukrainians, and the performance is still remembered as one of the most emotional in the entire history of Ukraine’s appearances at Eurovision Song Contest.
