Ukraine and EU agree to increase electricity imports in winter
Ukraine and the European Union have agreed to increase electricity import capacity starting December 1. This will increase the resilience of the Ukrainian energy system in the face of possible attacks on the energy infrastructure by Russia, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko says.
“Starting December 1, the maximum capacity for importing electricity from the EU will be increased from the current 1.7 to 2.1 GW. This will increase the resilience of the Ukrainian energy system in the face of criminal Russian shelling and infrastructure destruction,” he said.
The Minister expressed his gratitude to European partners and European Commissioner Kadri Simson for their support of Ukraine on the eve of the winter season.
The decision to increase import capacity was discussed in September during a meeting between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Kyiv.
Ukraine will also have an additional opportunity to receive 250 MW of capacity from the EU in an emergency mode.
In mid-May, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, CEO of NPC Ukrenergo, said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine that electricity imports from the EU to Ukraine had increased and almost reached a physical maximum.
