Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry thanked the United Kingdom for the new package of anti-Russian sanctions and called it an "important step" in countering Russia’s attempts to evade restrictions, according to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
"Thank you, dear Yvette (British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper - ed.), and the UK Government, for the new package of sanctions targeting individuals and entities linked to the Russian financial sector, in particular alternative payment systems and crypto-assets," he emphasized.
The minister said it is an "important step in our joint fight against sanctions evasion."
What preceded it
After easing sanctions on Russian oil, the United Kingdom is preparing new restrictions targeting the financial sector of Russia. The Ukrainian President’s Sanctions Commissioner, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, said the package will cover several key areas.
"We are expecting another major package from the United Kingdom as early as this week, which will focus specifically on the financial sector," he said.
Easing of sanctions against Russia
Earlier, on May 19, the United Kingdom issued a license allowing imports of diesel fuel and jet fuel refined from Russian oil in third countries.
The European Commission said it was surprised by London’s decision to ease sanctions in this area. Ukraine also reacted to the easing of sanctions against Russia.
In addition, on May 18, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that Washington had extended a temporary 30-day general license. It allows the most vulnerable countries to access Russian oil that is in transit at sea.
