The British military intercepted an oil tanker that was helping Russia circumvent sanctions, according to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

English Channel interception

On the morning of June 14, British forces intercepted a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel.

"This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide," says British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Russia's shadow fleet

The shadow fleet consists of vessels that Russia uses to sell oil in circumvention of international sanctions. They frequently change flags, turn off their navigation lights, and transport cargo via third countries.

On June 10, Ukrainian forces attacked the shadow fleet tanker WEST Horizon in the Black Sea. The vessel lost propulsion due to damage to its engine. The tanker was subject to sanctions by the UK, Ukraine, and Australia for transporting Russian oil.

Meanwhile, India is also stepping up pressure on the shadow fleet: over the past three years, the country has revoked the certification of over 200 vessels, mostly oil tankers, making it harder for them to access ports and obtain insurance.

A recent international investigation found that, starting in the spring of 2025, Wagner mercenaries, individuals without maritime credentials but with combat experience, began appearing aboard tankers in Russia’s shadow fleet. Their mission is to prevent the West from forcibly stopping oil-carrying vessels.
