UK intelligence estimates Russian army losses since beginning of war against Ukraine
The average range of casualties in the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine is reported to be 320,000 people killed and wounded. However, even Moscow doesn't know the exact figures, according to the UK Ministry of Defense.
As indicated in the update, between February 24, 2022, and November 2023, official Russian MoD forces likely suffered between 180,000 and 240,000 personnel wounded and approximately 50,000 killed. Wagner Group mercenaries likely suffered about 40,000 wounded and 20,000 killed.
"Therefore, overall, the Russian side has likely suffered around 220,000-280,000 wounded and approximately 70,000 killed," the statement says.
The total losses of Russian combatants are estimated in the range of 290,000-350,000.
According to the intelligence, the median of the estimate range is 320,000 total losses for Russian combatants.
However, "even amongst Russian officials, there is likely a low level of understanding about total casualty figures because of a long-established culture of dishonest reporting within the military," notes the Defense Intelligence.
Losses in the Russian army
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia's losses over the last day amounted to 770, and the total number of losses by December 4 reached 332,810 personnel since the beginning of the invasion.
As reported by The Guardian, according to Western officials, Russia's losses range between 300,000 and 400,000 killed and wounded, with the fiercest battles near Avdiivka resulting in losses of 500-1,000 per day.
Earlier, UK intelligence reported that the record losses in the Russian army in November 2023 were caused by the offensive on Avdiivka.
