Leader of the Labour Party Keir Starmer has made his first official statement following the publication of exit polls from the parliamentary election in the UK, which give him a high chance of becoming the Prime Minister, reports Bloomberg.

"Tonight people here and around the country have spoken and they’re ready for change. You have voted, it is now time for us to deliver," said Starmer, comfortably seated in his chair in North London.

Meanwhile, UK Defence Minister Grant Shapps became the first minister in Rishi Sunak's government to concede his seat to the Labour Party. He is among several senior ministers expected to leave parliament today.

Earlier, Justice Minister Alex Chalk lost his seat to the Liberal Democrats.

Parliamentary election in the UK

On May 22, Prime Minister of the UK Rishi Sunak dissolved parliament and called for an early election following an audience with the King.

The election of a new parliament by the British took place on Thursday, July 4. The main contenders as usual were the Conservatives and Labour.

According to opinion polls, Labour has a strong chance of winning the race, with Keir Starmer potentially becoming the new Prime Minister. The first exit polls after the polling stations closed confirmed these forecasts.
