U.S. to strengthen Ukraine's air defense
The Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, held a telephone conversation with the National Security Advisor to the President of the United States, Jake Sullivan. The parties agreed to strengthen Ukrainian air defense, according to Andriy Yermak's Telegram channel.
During the conversation, the leaders discussed the consequences of the recent extensive shelling of Ukrainian territory by the Russian Federation, involving various types of missile weaponry and kamikaze drones such as the Shahed.
"I informed about the results of the Ukrainian air defense forces, which successfully intercepted the majority of enemy aerial targets, including aeroballistic missiles like the Kinzhal. They agreed on the importance of strengthening Ukrainian air defense. The significance of maintaining the necessary level of support for Ukrainian air defense from the United States was emphasized," wrote the head of the President's Office.
Yermak also expressed sincere gratitude to the team of U.S. President Joe Biden for all efforts aimed at the swift approval of the necessary assistance package for Ukraine by the U.S. Congress.
Furthermore, the leaders coordinated steps for implementing Ukrainian-American collaboration plans for 2024 across all areas, particularly in the field of national security.
Massive Russian strike on Ukraine
On Tuesday, January 2, Russian occupiers once again launched a massive attack on Ukraine using kamikaze drones and missiles of various types.
The main target of the attack was Kyiv. Near the capital, air defense forces successfully intercepted around 60 missiles. Notably, 10 hypersonic aeroballistic missiles Kinzhal were hit, launched from MiG-31K aircraft.
In total, Ukrainian defenders destroyed 72 missiles.
Despite the effective work of the air defense systems, casualties were reported in Kyiv and several regions. In the capital, dozens of civilians were injured due to falling debris.
