U.S. Senate Republican leader supports aid for Ukraine and Israel in one package
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell advocated for the allocation of aid to both Ukraine and Israel within a single package, despite the House of Representatives insisting on separate bills, reports CNN.
It is expected that this week, newly elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Mike Johnson will present a bill for a vote, which only provides aid to Israel. Mitch McConnell has advocated for the inclusion of aid to Ukraine.
"This is a moment for swift and decisive action to prevent further loss of life, and to impose real consequences on the tyrants who have terrorized the people of Ukraine and of Israel. And right now, the Senate has a chance to produce supplemental assistance that will help us do exactly that," McConnell stated.
He also noted that the aggression against Israel and Ukraine is linked because China, Russia, and Iran form a new "axis of evil."
"Think of it as an axis of evil: China, Russia and Iran. So this is not just a test for Ukraine. It is a test for the United States and from the free world. And the path toward greater security for all of us is simple: Help Ukraine win the war," said the Senate Republican leader.
What proceeded this
There are currently discussions in the Senate regarding support for President Joe Biden's request in Congress for $106 billion. Out of this amount, $61.3 billion is proposed to be allocated to Ukraine, and $14.3 billion to Israel.
The newly elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives has suggested not combining the new aid to Ukraine and Israel into one package. He wants the House of Representatives to vote on these initiatives separately.
