U.S. selects new candidate for House of Representatives Speaker
A new candidate has been chosen for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives from the Republicans in the United States, according to CNN.
Congressman Tom Emmer from Minnesota has become the latest candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives from the Republicans after members of the Republican Party conducted a multi-round secret ballot. Emmer defeated a group of seven other Republicans to secure the nomination. However, it is still unknown whether he will have the necessary votes in the House of Representatives to assume the position.
Emmer emerged as the winner in the fifth round of voting with the following tally:
- Emmer: 117
- Congressman Mike Johnson from Louisiana: 97
- Others: 5
However, Emmer's total vote count has not yet reached 217, which is the number required to win the position of Speaker in the House of Representatives.
About Emmer
Emmer was first elected to Congress in 2014 and became a member of the majority earlier this year. He has repeatedly expressed a pro-Ukrainian position and supported initiatives aimed at assisting Ukraine.
However, Emmer's candidacy may not be supported by the radical wing of the Republican Party, known as Trumpists. These are supporters of the 45th U.S. President, Donald Trump, against whom Emmer has spoken out on multiple occasions.
Emmer's fate will be determined by the vote in the U.S. House of Representatives. The previous candidate, Kevin McCarthy, attempted to be elected three times, but Republicans failed to reach an agreement. Therefore, it was decided to select a new candidate.
Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives elections
At the beginning of October, members of the House of Representatives decided to oust Kevin McCarthy. Afterward, the process of electing a new Speaker began.
The Republicans, who hold the majority in the lower house, initially chose Jim Jordan as their primary candidate, who is an opponent of aid to Ukraine. However, he failed to secure the position after three votes in the House of Representatives.
Earlier, the Republicans announced nine candidates for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
