'There is bipartisan support': White House is sure Congress to pass aid for Ukraine and Israel
Joe Biden's request for $106 billion, which includes funding for aid to Ukraine and Israel, will be supported by both Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Congress, announced White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at a briefing.
"As it relates to the broader national security package and domestic package, as we talk about Israel, Ukraine, and the other domestic pieces of the supplemental, we believe there is bipartisan support;" said Jean-Pierre.
According to her, "these are emergency requests", which is why they are likely to be supported by both parties in Congress.
"So, certainly, we want to see that moving forward," added Jean-Pierre.
What preceded
Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden submitted a request to the U.S. Congress for $106 billion. It includes funding for assistance to Ukraine and Israel, as well as border security with Mexico.
Following this, the new Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, proposed a separate vote for aid to Israel. He introduced the corresponding bill, which has already been supported by the lower house of Congress.
However, the Senate (the upper house), where Democrats have the majority, refuses even to consider such an initiative. At the same time, the White House has repeatedly emphasized that even if the bill passes Congress, Joe Biden will veto it.
