Poland may change its approach to new commitments to Ukraine. Ahead of the NATO summit, Warsaw outlined a position that could affect the allies' future decisions.

Tusk urges against making new financial commitments

Ahead of the NATO summit, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged the delegation led by President Karol Nawrocki to refrain from making statements that would entail new financial commitments to Ukraine.

According to the prime minister, Warsaw is already carrying a significant burden by protecting the European Union's eastern border, so the country's own defense spending should be taken into account when making new decisions.

Poland is not abandoning support for Ukraine

Tusk stressed that his position does not mean refusing to support Ukraine.

"It is not because I believe Ukraine does not need financial support. I believe that Poland has very important obligations along the entire eastern border of the EU, and everyone must take that into account," Tusk said.

He also noted that, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, Poland is currently bearing the main burden of protecting the European Union's eastern borders from external threats.

What is expected to be discussed at the NATO summit

The NATO summit will take place in Ankara on July 7–8. One of the key topics is expected to be the creation of a €40 billion military support fund for Ukraine.

According to Tusk, the Polish delegation should take into account the country's existing defense spending and approach any new financial commitments with caution while maintaining support for Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukraine warned that Russian intelligence services are preparing a new information campaign related to the Volhynia tragedy. According to the Ukrainian side, its goal is to increase tensions in relations between Ukraine and Poland, and the leadership of Russia's FSB is coordinating the operation.
