On the night of October 12 to 13, a military transport aircraft, the Tu-134, was set on fire in Russia. The Soviet-era plane is used, among other things, for transporting senior officials of the Ministry of Defense of the terrorist state, according to the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU).

According to DIU, the aircraft belonged to the 117th Military Transport Aviation Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces and was stationed at the military airfield Orenburg-2.

Currently, no further details about the situation are disclosed.

Tu-134

The Tu-134 is a Soviet passenger aircraft developed by the Tupolev design bureau in the 1960s. It is intended for short- and medium-haul flights and is one of the most well-known jet aircraft of that era. The first modification of the Tu-134 made its maiden flight in 1963, and commercial operations began in 1967.

The aircraft has two engines located at the tail and can carry up to 80 passengers.

Russian aviation

Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there have been increasing incidents of arson at military facilities in Russia, including helicopters and aircraft.

For example, in September alone, two such incidents occurred:

  • On the night of September 11, two schoolboys, aged 13 and 14, reportedly set fire to a multipurpose Mi-8 helicopter. They were promised 5 million rubles for this act.
  • On September 21, a military Mi-8 helicopter burned in the city of Omsk. Schoolboys were also allegedly involved in this arson.
