US President Donald Trump promises Russian President Vladimir Putin very serious consequences if he refuses to end the war against Ukraine during their meeting in Alaska on August 15, the American leader said while speaking with journalists.

Trump was asked whether there would be consequences for Putin if he refuses to stop the war.

"There will be consequences," the American leader replied briefly.

Later, he was asked whether these would be sanctions or tariffs.

"Yes, they will. I don't have to say. There will be very severe consequences," Trump said.

Trump's ultimatum

Earlier, US President Donald Trump had already issued an ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump threatened that if Russia did not establish a ceasefire with Ukraine by August 8, he would impose secondary sanctions and secondary tariffs against it.

Russia has continued to refuse a ceasefire, but Trump did not impose the sanctions.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that possible sanctions could become one of the topics of negotiations during Trump's meeting with Putin.
