The United States is ready to impose "major" sanctions on Russia, provided that all NATO countries stop buying Russian oil, according to US President Donald Trump's page on Truth Social.

"I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO nations stop buying oil from Russia," Trump said.

According to him, NATO's commitment to victory has not been fully met, and the fact that some Alliance members continue to buy Russian oil is shocking, as it significantly weakens the negotiating position and leverage against Russia.

"I believe that this, as well as NATO, as a group, placing 50% to 100% TARIFFS ON CHINA, to be fully withdrawn after the WAR with Russia and Ukraine is ended, will also be of great help in ENDING this deadly but RIDICULOUS, WAR," added the US president.

He emphasized that this step should help end the war, as China has strong control over — and even influence on — Russia.

"If NATO does as I say, the WAR will end quickly, and all of those lives will be saved. If not, you are just wasting my time, energy, and money of the United States," Trump concluded.

What preceded this

Earlier, the US Department of Commerce published a list of companies from Russia, China, India, Turkey, and other countries that will face export restrictions, effective September 16.

On September 12, President Trump also stated that his patience with Russia is running out quickly. According to the US leader, sanctions against Russian banks and the oil sector could be used to pressure Russia further.

It has also been reported that the US will propose that G7 members intensify sanctions and tariff pressure on Russia, including developing a mechanism to seize Russian assets.

The US proposal calls for secondary tariffs of 50% to 100% on China and India, as well as import and export restrictions, to reduce the flow of Russian energy resources and prevent the transfer of dual-use technologies to Russia.
