US President Donald Trump said strikes on Iran could resume if Tehran and Washington fail to reach a final agreement on Iran's nuclear program, with negotiations expected to take place in the near future, according to the Times of Israel.

In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said he is prepared to return to a military option regarding Iran if the parties fail to reach a final settlement on the nuclear program issue. According to him, the possibility of new strikes remains on the table if the negotiation process fails.

The US president also spoke sharply about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump called him a "very difficult guy" and said the Israeli leader should be grateful to the United States for its role in containing Iran's nuclear program.

According to the White House chief, if Iran were to obtain nuclear weapons, it would pose an existential threat to Jerusalem. He stressed that this is why Washington continues to insist on reaching an agreement that would prevent Tehran from creating a nuclear arsenal.

Trump's latest remarks came amid active efforts toward a remotely negotiated agreement between Washington and Tehran. Despite the White House's optimism, a final decision on the agreement has not yet been reached, and Iran previously stated that it had not made a final decision on the proposed terms.

As is known, in recent weeks, the American leader has repeatedly urged Israel to refrain from new strikes on Iran in order not to derail diplomatic efforts. At the same time, he warned that if negotiations fail, the United States is prepared to consider tougher measures against Tehran.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces carried out strikes on Beirut's southern suburb of Dahieh on Sunday, which Trump criticized.
