US President Donald Trump said Democrats could launch an impeachment effort against him if Republicans lose their majority in Congress after the midterm elections. He urged supporters to turn out in greater numbers, since his own name will not appear on the ballot, according to The Hill.
What Trump said
“I’m going to be impeached. They’re going to impeach me. They have no idea why,” Trump told supporters at a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The US president urged voters to treat the election as though he himself were on the ballot, even though his name will not actually appear.
Why Trump is talking about it now
Trump openly acknowledged a challenge Republicans face when he is not on the ballot: mobilizing his core supporters becomes more difficult. He therefore urged his supporters not to skip the midterm elections, emphasizing that the vote will determine which party controls Congress.
According to Trump, losing the Republican majority could create serious problems for his political agenda.
Why Trump held the rally
Trump spoke ahead of the South Carolina primary, where Senator Lindsey Graham is seeking to retain her Senate seat for another six-year term. The president publicly endorsed her candidacy, and Graham joined him onstage at the rally.
Efforts to impeach Trump have been underway for years. In December 2025, another attempt to hold an impeachment vote produced an unexpected result in the House of Representatives, with some Democrats voting alongside Republicans.
Earlier, in April 2025, Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar introduced his own initiative to remove Trump from office, while another Democrat, Al Green, announced plans to introduce a separate impeachment resolution.
However, in May, the House of Representatives said it would not hold an impeachment vote, effectively derailing Trump's opponents' efforts. Still, sources say people close to the president acknowledge that if Democrats win control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, another impeachment effort could well follow.
