The American leader responded to whether he wants the first step to come from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Russian President regarding an end to the war before the US joins negotiations with them.
"Well, I don't mind. I mean, let them deal. I'm the one that got them to this position, and I think that's going to get worked out. I think we're getting close to where Russia (and) Ukraine should have... But I think that's going to get worked out," Trump emphasized.
He noted that he believes the war in Ukraine will end and reiterated that it should never have started in the first place.
The day before, Zelenskyy published a letter addressed to the Russian leader. This came after a statement that, amid the US focus on the situation with Iran, Ukraine is ready for direct talks with Russia in order not to delay possible decisions.
In the address, the head of state stressed that Russia will not be able to establish control over Donbas this year and called for ending the war through negotiations. As an interim step, he proposed introducing a ceasefire based on the principle of "hold the line where you are."
Donald Trump positively reacted to the Ukrainian initiative, saying he welcomes discussions about a possible meeting between the parties. According to him, Washington has made significant efforts to create the conditions necessary for such dialogue.
At the same time, the Russian President said he currently sees no point in a personal meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but outlined a condition under which such a meeting could take place.
