US President Donald Trump personally asked Chinese leader Xi Jinping to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.
According to sources, during a meeting in Beijing, Trump told Xi that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine had reached a deadlock. Against this backdrop, he urged China to encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to return to the negotiating table with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The post notes that this appeal reflected Washington’s clear expectation that Beijing would become involved in efforts to end the war. The conflict has been a central element of Trump’s foreign policy agenda since his return to the White House in 2025.
Chance to end the war in Ukraine
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of the Servant of the People (Sluha narodu) faction. At that meeting, he said that the hot phase of the war could end by November.
Today, the Head of the Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that ending the war as soon as possible is a direct order from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to him, ending hostilities before winter is a realistic goal.
He also noted that there are already real grounds for a ceasefire and that Ukraine, for its part, is preparing for important negotiations with Western partners, while categorically ruling out any surrender of territory.
