Trump to nominate businessman with no military experience to lead US Navy
Future US President Donald Trump has chosen a candidate to lead the US Navy. Businessman John Phelan may get the position, according to The Hill.
"John will be a tremendous force for our Naval Servicemembers, and a steadfast leader in advancing my America First vision," Trump said.
John Phelan is the founder and chairman of Rugger Management LLC, a Florida-based private investment firm. He was also the managing partner of MSD Capital, a private equity firm.
American media emphasize that Phelan, who is expected to be appointed head of the Navy, has not served in the army.
Phelan is an active donor to Trump's campaign and other committees affiliated with the Republican Party. In April, he donated more than $834,000 to Trump's joint committee. In August, the businessman hosted the Republican at his home when he came to a charity event in Aspen, Colorado.
The position of Navy chief requires the approval of the Senate, where the Republican Party will have a majority next year.
Trump's team
After winning the US presidential election, Donald Trump began to form his team. Many representatives of the future Trump administration support Ukraine, but several people have made ambiguous statements about the war in Ukraine.
Senator J.D. Vance will be appointed vice president of the United States. He has refused to call Russian president Vladimir Putin an enemy and has suggested that Ukraine should make territorial concessions to end the war.
In addition, Trump wants to appoint South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem to head the Department of the Interior. She has argued that helping Ukraine was a strategic mistake for the United States.
