US President Donald Trump plans to announce the creation of a Peace Council for the Gaza Strip as early as next week, as part of the implementation of the second phase of the peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, reports Axios.
Two Trump administration officials and two additional sources confirmed that the US president intends to announce the establishment of the Peace Council next week. The council will consist of 15 world leaders and will oversee the work of a yet-to-be-formed Palestinian government, as well as supervise the reconstruction process.
“Invitations are going out to key countries to be members of the board,” one source said.
Members of the newly created body could include the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye. Former UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nikolay Mladenov may be appointed as the Council’s on-the-ground representative. He is reportedly planning to visit Israel this week.
The first meeting of the Peace Council could take place during the World Economic Forum in Davos later this month. However, sources noted that the plans may change depending on President Trump’s foreign policy agenda, with developments in Venezuela and the situation in Ukraine potentially having an impact.
On October 8, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and the Hamas group had agreed, following talks held in Egypt, to implement the first stage of the peace plan he proposed.
On October 13, in Sharm el-Sheikh, the leaders of the US, Egypt, and Türkiye signed an agreement to end hostilities in Gaza. They acted as mediators in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
Meanwhile, on December 20, the US, together with representatives of Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye, met in Miami to assess the implementation of the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza and discuss progress in preparing the second phase. The announcement of the implementation of the second phase had been planned for December 25, but it did not take place.
