Trump tightens control over officials as Musk steps back from DOGE - WSJ

The administration of Donald Trump is attempting to control the firing and hiring of officials and civil servants. This comes as Elon Musk reduces his involvement with the Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), The Wall Street Journal informs.
At the end of April, amid a decline in Tesla's profits, Musk promised to cut his time at DOGE to one or two days a week. He will focus on managing his own companies.
According to sources, the Federal Personnel Management Agency, an independent body within the US government, will take over the control of staffing policies for government institutions.
According to WSJ, citing official documents from the agency, officials will be evaluated based on their diligent implementation of the laws and policies of the president. Advancing Trump's political agenda will become the main element of civil servants' performance evaluations.
The plan is for US agencies to transition to the new system starting from the 2026 fiscal year (i.e., from October 1st).
Musk reduces US government staff
Billionaire Elon Musk, who heads the US Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), has initiated large-scale cuts to federal agencies, resulting in the firing of thousands of civil servants.
These actions have sparked mixed reactions, even among Donald Trump’s allies. The media reported a conflict between Musk and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, though the Trump administration has denied this information.
According to Politico, following the wave of firings, US President Donald Trump decided to limit Musk's powers.
