US leader Donald Trump has threatened the British broadcaster BBC with a $1 billion lawsuit. He accused it of attempting to interfere in last year's election by editing one of his presidential speeches, according to NBC News.

"The BBC defamed President Trump by intentionally and deceitfully editing its documentary to try and interfere in the Presidential Election," NBC News quoted a spokesperson for Trump's legal team as saying.

It is also noted that the American leader will continue to "hold accountable those who traffic in lies, deception, and fake news."

BBC received a letter from the US president's lawyers setting a deadline — Friday, November 14, at 10:00 p.m. GMT. By that time, the broadcaster must issue a full and fair retraction of the Panorama documentary.

BBC scandal over Trump's speech

BBC Director-General Tim Davie and News Director Deborah Turness resigned amid the scandal involving the falsification of the American leader's speech.

According to an investigation by The Telegraph, the BBC Panorama documentary contained an edited version of Trump's speech, which misled viewers.

Specifically, the BBC combined two parts of Trump's speech to create the impression that he openly encouraged and called for the storming of the US Capitol in 2021.

It is noted that Trump accused the BBC's top executives of attempting to influence the outcome of last year's US presidential election.

The US president focused on the Director-General of the British broadcaster, Tim Davie, and the Director of News, Deborah Turness, whom he also accused of corruption.
