The US does not rule out imposing secondary sanctions on Russia. Such restrictions could come sooner than 50 days, said US President Donald Trump during a conversation with journalists.

Trump was asked whether he plans to introduce secondary sanctions against Russia. He also did not rule out that these sanctions could be imposed before his 50-day deadline.

"We're looking at that whole situation. It could be that we have to put secondary sanctions on them," he said.

Secondary tariffs against Russia

A few weeks ago, President Trump issued an ultimatum to Russia - either the Kremlin ends the war against Ukraine within 50 days, or 100% secondary tariffs will be imposed on Moscow.

Earlier, the US leader repeatedly said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin lies a lot and does not want to end the war.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that Russia would face not only secondary tariffs but also secondary sanctions if it fails to make peace with Ukraine.

As former advisor to the Ukrainian President Oleh Ustenko told RBC-Ukraine, Trump’s very threat of sanctions already acts as sanctions.

Ustenko also emphasized that if the tariffs are approved, they will deal a serious blow to Russia.
