The Trump administration intends to push for trilateral talks with Ukraine and Russia, as well as involve other countries in the process, says Axios journalist Barak Ravid on X.

According to his source, talks on October 20 between Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as the leaders of Norway and Finland, were "very productive and constructive."

The American official said that Ukraine "brought forward new ideas and proposals, which were discussed in detail." As a result, the parties made "meaningful progress in aligning on a coordinated approach to engaging Russia and advancing the diplomatic process."

He added that there is currently "strong alignment at the working level" between the US, Ukraine, and Europe on the next steps, and that the parties share commitment to "finding practical solutions to end the war."

Tuesday's talks in Oslo covered elements of a comprehensive peace program, including long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, a postwar economic prosperity plan, and "broader European security architecture designed to create lasting stability."

The American official added that today, October 21, Witkoff will meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, while Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will participate online. The US goal is to secure a trilateral meeting and expand it.

"The goal is to build on the progress made with Ukraine and Europe, discuss the proposals with Russia, and create a pathway toward direct trilateral and broader multilateral negotiations," the official concluded.

What else is important to know

On October 20, following talks in Norway, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the meeting had addressed security guarantees for Ukraine. According to him, Witkoff will convey these proposals to Russia.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb also said that during the talks, the key idea for resolving the war had been found. These initiatives will now be presented to Moscow.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump continues to publicly pressure Ukraine to reach a peace agreement with Russia. He claims that the situation will continue to deteriorate.
