President Donald Trump announced that the US and Russia will hold a meeting on Wednesday, August 6. The American side will be represented by special envoy Steve Witkoff, according to a White House press conference and Reuters.

“Tomorrow, we have a meeting with Russia. Tomorrow, we’re going to see what happens,” Trump said.

The president also added that the goal of the talks will be to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.

“This is the one I’m trying to stop. And one I'm working hardest on. The others stopped within a matter of days,” Trump said.

He added that the US will later decide whether to impose tariffs on Russia and its trade partners. According to him, these steps will depend on Witkoff’s negotiations in Moscow.

Witkoff’s visit to Moscow

According to Reuters sources, US Special Envoy for Middle East affairs Steve Witkoff will arrive in Moscow on Wednesday, August 6, to meet with Russian leadership.

At this time, details about the diplomat’s schedule remain unknown.

“Of course, that special envoy Witkoff will be traveling to Russia this week, so we can confirm that from this podium. What that will entail, I have no details for you,” said State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce during a briefing.

The Russian news agency TASS, citing sources in the aviation sector, reported that the plane likely carrying Witkoff has already departed from the US.

In recent weeks, Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin due to the escalation of large-scale attacks on Ukraine.

The White House chief gave Putin a deadline until August 8 to make progress toward peace in Ukraine. Otherwise, Trump threatened to impose tougher sanctions on Russia.

Earlier, Trump stated that Witkoff would visit Moscow on August 6 or 7 and added that the Kremlin requested this meeting.
