US President Donald Trump says in an interview with The New York Times that Russia and China are not afraid of NATO at all, but fear the United States solely because of its strong military.
"But we have to keep the United States safe. We have to keep parts of the world safe that we feel responsible for. NATO is not feared by Russia or China at all. Not even a little bit," Trump says.
According to him, China and Russia are “extremely” afraid of the US only because the American leader allegedly created an army.
"If I didn’t rebuild the military, we’d be just like them," the US President adds.
Trump and NATO
Recently, the American leader has made a number of statements about the state of NATO and the importance of the Alliance for world politics.
Earlier, Trump said that the transatlantic alliance NATO is ineffective without the leading role of the US. Thus, he hinted that he would allow Greenland to return even at the cost of the collapse of the transatlantic alliance.
In addition, the US President previously announced that he was working with NATO to increase pressure on Russia. At the same time, the US President reiterated that the United States would no longer spend money on aid to Ukraine.
According to him, America even profits from arms supplies to Kyiv, which are financed by other members of the Alliance. He also added that now they pay in full, and NATO transfers the money to the US.
"We are selling a lot of weapons to NATO, and that's going, I guess, to Ukraine for the most part. That's up to them," Trump adds.
