International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan has been placed on the US sanctions list, reports Reuters. He issued an arrest warrant for Russian president Vladimir Putin,

Its sources say Karim Khan became the first person to be subjected to economic sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump. The name of the ICC prosecutor appeared in an executive order signed by Trump a day earlier, which has not yet been made public.

The sanctions include freezing the US assets of those on the list and a ban on entry to the US for them and their families.

According to the order, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in consultation with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has to submit a report within 60 days with the names of the persons against whom the sanctions will be imposed.

On March 1, 2022, Karim Khan, as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, announced the launch of an investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Russia in Ukraine. He filed a petition for an arrest warrant for Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Russian commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova in the case of the deportation of Ukrainian children.

On May 20, 2024, Khan also requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas leaders.

Trump's sanctions against ICC

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions against the International Criminal Court over the case against the Israeli leadership.

Trump's order emphasizes that the ICC has no jurisdiction over either the United States or Israel, as neither country is a party to the Rome Statute or a member of the ICC.

The International Criminal Court sharply criticized Trump's decision on sanctions, and the EU said it would pose a serious challenge to the court's work.
