EU criticizes Trump's decision to impose sanctions on ICC

The European Union criticizes the US sanctions against the International Criminal Court, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“The ICC guarantees accountability for international crimes and gives a voice to victims worldwide. It must be able to freely pursue the fight against global impunity. Europe will always stand for justice and the respect of international law,” she said.
A spokesperson for the European Commission, quoted by The Guardian, said that the EU regrets the US decision to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court.
“The executive order represents a serious challenge to the work of the ICC with the risks of affecting ongoing investigations and proceedings, including as regards Ukraine, impacting years of efforts to ensure accountability around the world,” the spokesperson said.
The EU emphasized that it will monitor the consequences of Trump's order and assess possible further steps.
Trump's decision against ICC
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing sanctions against the International Criminal Court. This decision was made because of the case against the Israeli leadership.
In 2024, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Trump's decree states that the ICC's warrants are baseless.
In addition, the US president's decree emphasizes that the ICC has no jurisdiction over either the United States or Israel, as neither country is a party to the Rome Statute or a member of the ICC.
The International Criminal Court sharply criticized Trump's decision on sanctions.
