US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on February 6 imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). The move comes in response to the court's investigation into Israel, reports the Associated Press.

Trump's executive order states that the actions of the ICC create a dangerous precedent. The sanctions currently imposed include a ban on ICC officials entering the US.

The Associated Press clarified and reminded that Israel is a close ally of the US. The ICC, for its part, recently, before Trump's second presidential term, issued an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his actions towards Palestinians in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.

Earlier, NBC News, announcing Trump's decision to impose sanctions on the ICC, reported that the executive order would also include financial and visa restrictions against court officials involved in investigations concerning US citizens or their allies. The sanctions would also affect the families of ICC employees.

During his first presidential term, Trump emphasized that the International Criminal Court lacked jurisdiction, legitimacy, and authority in the US and that neither the US nor Israel were signatories to the Rome Statute.
