Almost half of Americans do not support US President Donald Trump's efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine, according to The Hill.
When asked about their support for "the way Donald Trump is handling the situation with Russia and Ukraine," 49% of respondents said they "somewhat disapprove" or "strongly disapprove."
Thirty percent of respondents in the same poll said they"somewhat approve" or "strongly approve" of Trump's actions, while 20% were unsure of their answer.
The agency notes that in the first year of Trump's second term, his administration persistently sought to end the war in Ukraine, but without much success.
Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met on Sunday in Mar-a-Lago, and after the meeting, both leaders said at a joint press conference that progress had been made on the 20-point peace plan supported by Zelenskyy.
In the Economist/YouGov poll, 27% of respondents said they believed Russia currently had the upper hand in the war, 6% believed Ukraine had the upper hand, and 44% were unable to determine who had the upper hand.
Twenty-four percent of respondents were unsure which side had the upper hand.
The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted from December 26 to 29, with 1,550 respondents participating. The margin of error is 3.6 percentage points.
Trump's efforts and peace plan
Today, US President Donald Trump said that in 2026, he will seek to establish peace throughout the world.
On December 28, Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks in Florida, during which they discussed the details of a peace plan to end the war.
After the meeting, both leaders made statements about its results. In particular, Trump reported some progress on the Donbas issue, noting that no final decisions had been made yet, but that the parties were close to reaching agreements.
He also announced the creation of a special working group on peaceful settlement, which will work with senior US officials and liaise with the Russian side.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for his part, said that the peace plan had been agreed upon 90%, and security guarantees from the US 100%.
