Trump's Treasury Secretary nominee does not rule out new harsh sanctions against Russia
The administration of US President-elect Donald Trump plans to strengthen sanctions against Russia. These measures could become part of the strategy to end the war in Ukraine, states Trump’s nominee for Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, according to CNBC.
"If any officials in the Russian Federation are watching this confirmation hearing, they should know that if I’m confirmed, and if President Trump requests as part of his strategy to end the Ukraine war, that I will be 100% on board from taking sanctions up," he said.
According to him, this especially applies to Russian oil companies, to a level that would force the Russian Federation to come to the negotiating table.
US sanctions against Russia
Newly elected US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to end Russia's war against Ukraine. One of his boldest claims was that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours.
Sanctions against Russia play a significant role in this strategy. Today, Bloomberg reported that Trump’s advisers are developing a comprehensive sanctions strategy aimed at facilitating a diplomatic agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Currently, two approaches are being considered.
Additionally, several recent statements highlight the evolving stance within Trump’s team. On one hand, there is a desire for an "as advantageous as possible" end to the war for Ukraine. On the other hand, Trump's expectations for ending Russia's war against Ukraine have reportedly shifted toward Easter, compared to his earlier claim of achieving it within 24 hours.
