US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the US president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner may soon visit Moscow again to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discuss peace in Ukraine, Axios reports.
As previously reported, Witkoff and Kushner will meet with Ukrainian and European delegations in Miami today, Friday, to present "new ideas and proposals" aimed at breaking the deadlock in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
According to Axios, the Trump administration hopes to achieve a diplomatic breakthrough ahead of the US midterm elections and before the onset of a harsh winter in Ukraine.
One of the goals is a partial ceasefire that would halt attacks on energy infrastructure and grain supplies. Although Ukraine has said it is ready to take this step, Russia has so far shown little willingness to do so.
"They are all nervous about the winter. It will be a tough winter if the war does not stop. So the US is trying to mediate with the sides, with the goal of creating a unified proposal," a US source said.
On Thursday, Witkoff and Kushner met with President Donald Trump to present the latest US proposal and get his feedback ahead of the talks in Miami, which are expected to last two days.
According to the source, the parties will discuss proposals for security guarantees for Ukraine, a postwar prosperity plan, and other aspects of the war.
A Ukrainian official told the outlet that despite skepticism in Kyiv, the US midterm elections and Russia’s need to have sanctions lifted could prompt Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to some form of ceasefire.
"Witkoff and Kushner might travel to Moscow later this month for more talks with Putin," Axios concluded, citing a source.
Peace talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already announced that Ukrainian and US delegations will hold talks in Miami on October 9 and 10. He said the Ukrainian side would call for increased pressure on Moscow.
According to RBC-Ukraine, the meeting in Miami will focus on stepping up diplomatic efforts and the possibility of preparing a trilateral meeting with Russia.
