Trump’s special envoy to meet Venezuelan President – Reuters

Richard Grenell, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for special missions, will meet with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro today, January 31, according to Reuters.
Grenell is expected to discuss the deportation of illegal migrants from the US to Venezuela. Previously, Maduro stated that his country would not accept planes carrying deported migrants.
During his first term, Trump had already declared that the US did not need migrants.
Another possible topic of discussion is the fate of US citizens detained in Venezuela. Republican Senator Rick Scott of Florida urged the talks to focus on their release, emphasizing that the key issues should be the return of abducted Americans and the deportation of Venezuelan criminals from the US.
Venezuelan elections
On Friday, January 10, Nicolás Maduro was inaugurated in Venezuela. On that day, he took the presidential oath and began his third term as head of state.
Venezuela’s presidential elections took place on July 28, 2024. According to official results, the country’s electoral commission declared Maduro the winner. However, the opposition conducted a parallel vote count and dismissed the results as fraudulent, instead recognizing their candidate, Edmundo González, as the true winner.
Shortly after, several countries, including the US, recognized González as Venezuela’s legitimate President. However, he was forced to leave the country.
Recently, it was reported that Trump’s administration wants Maduro to leave the post of head of state. However, it is not yet clear how this can be realized.
