Representatives of Trump involved in peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are unlikely to visit Kyiv anytime soon. They have, however, traveled to Moscow on multiple occasions, according to The New York Times.
Witkoff and Kushner are not planning a trip to Ukraine
An official who requested anonymity said that Trump's envoys hold daily talks with Ukrainian and Russian officials. They have also held private meetings that were not publicly disclosed.
However, the source told the outlet that Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff would travel to Russia and Ukraine only if there are new issues to discuss. There will be no visit "for a photo op."
Russia seeks visits from Trump's envoys
Officials in Moscow are also hoping to resume cooperation with Witkoff and Kushner.
The Russians are "desperately waiting for the return of Witkoff and Kushner," said Thomas Greminger, a former diplomat and head of a Swiss think tank.
Russian President Vladimir Putin particularly values his relationship with Steve Witkoff, viewing him as a tool for achieving goals such as keeping Ukraine out of NATO. However, Russian officials are frustrated by the irregular nature of visits by "Trump's people" and the lack of follow-up action.
"If you’re going to move this process to resolution, it requires an intense diplomatic effort," said Thomas Graham.
"The US is the only country in a position to lead it, if they were so inclined," he added.
Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner held talks several days ago. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he is still waiting for US special envoys to visit Ukraine.
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were also planning to meet Iranian officials in Switzerland. The talks are expected to address Tehran's nuclear program.
