Trump's classified documents case closed in US
Florida District Judge Aileen Cannon has decided to dismiss the case against former US President Donald Trump for improper storage of classified documents, according to Reuters.
Cannon, a Trump appointee, ruled that Special Counsel John Smith, who led the prosecution, did not have the authority to bring a case against the former US President.
According to the judge, Smith was unlawfully appointed to his position by US Attorney General Merrick Garland.
As Reuters notes, Cannon's decision is likely to be appealed. Previously, US courts have repeatedly affirmed the Department of Justice's right to appoint special counsels for certain politically sensitive investigations.
Trump has already stated that Cannon's decision should be "just the first step," and called for the dismissal of all four criminal cases against him.
"Let us come together to end all Weaponization of our Justice System," Trump wrote.
Classified documents case
Earlier, classified documents were discovered at Trump's residence in Florida, which he was supposed to turn over after his term ended.
As a result, a case was opened against the former US President.
