Trump’s advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Paris to discuss the US peace plan for Ukraine, Axios informs.
The meeting took place after Witkoff and Kushner held talks with Ukrainian and European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
The main issues discussed were security guarantees for Ukraine and possible territorial concessions in eastern Donbas, as well as aligning the details of the peace plan ahead of further engagement with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that an agreement on security guarantees is effectively ready to be finalized at the highest level. The Ukrainian side also proposed options for the finalization of the document on territorial issues related to the conflict.
At present, Russian President Vladimir Putin has given no public signals that he is ready to agree to the proposal or even seriously consider it.
Zelenskyy also noted that Ukraine has received confirmation that the United States will enter into negotiations with Russia on the current proposal and stressed the need to maintain pressure on Moscow at the same intensity as the work of Ukraine’s negotiating teams.
Peace talks
On January 6 in Paris, Ukraine, the United States, and countries of the Coalition of the Willing discussed security guarantees as part of a future peace agreement. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the guarantees must include legally binding steps by allies in the event of renewed Russian aggression.
Members of the Coalition of the Willing, together with Ukraine, signed a joint declaration on security guarantees to ensure a lasting peace after the war. The text of the document was coordinated with the United States.
Kirill Dmitriev, a Kremlin representative, was spotted in Paris the day after the Coalition of the Willing summit. According to media reports, he may have visited the US embassy for talks related to the war in Ukraine.
