Trump resumes some foreign aid programs - NYT
The United States has canceled some aid programs for other countries, namely life-saving projects, The New York Times reports.
On Tuesday, January 28, the administration of President Donald Trump partially abandoned the order to terminate almost all US foreign aid programs. An exception was made for life-saving humanitarian aid programs.
In a memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio to federal agencies and aid recipients, it is stated that such programs should continue or resume operations if they have been suspended.
According to media reports, these are programs that provide basic life-saving medicines, medical services, food, shelter, and livelihoods.
At the same time, The Washington Post writes that many humanitarian organizations that received Rubio's order did not understand whether they could continue to work.
US frozen foreign aid
After taking office, US President Donald Trump issued a decree freezing foreign aid programs to other countries for 90 days. During this period, Trump's team must determine whether the programs are in line with their policies.
The US State Department also issued a directive to freeze international aid and suspend new programs. This suspended some humanitarian aid to Ukraine. As reported, the office of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Ukraine has suspended projects.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the State Department's decision would not stop military assistance to Ukraine.
