Trump ready to rebuild ties with Kim Jong Un: 'I got along with him'
The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox News, stated that he plans to resume negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
During the interview, Trump recalled having good relations with Kim Jong Un during his first presidential term.
"He liked me, and I got along with him," he noted and declared his readiness to reconnect with the North Korean dictator, answering a journalist's question.
The Republican also emphasized that Kim Jong Un is allegedly "not a religious zealot" and is a "smart guy."
Relations between the US and North Korea
Relations between the United States and North Korea have always been tense due to North Korea's nuclear program, sanctions, and political differences. The US has called on North Korea to halt nuclear tests, while Pyongyang has regarded this as interference in its internal affairs. Negotiations between the two countries have repeatedly stalled.
A notable event was Donald Trump’s visit to North Korea in June 2019. This was the first-ever meeting between a sitting US president and North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, on North Korean territory.
On November, Reuters reported that Trump’s team was discussing the possibility of holding direct talks with dictator Kim Jong Un.
