US President Donald Trump publicly commented for the first time on the results of the election in Hungary, saying he is not concerned about the defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whom he supported, Trump told ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl.
The US president positively assessed the election winner, the leader of the Tisza party, Péter Magyar, who won the parliamentary elections on April 12.
"I think the new man's going to do a good job — he's a good man," Trump said.
He noted that Magyar had previously been part of Orbán's Fidesz party and holds similar positions, particularly on migration policy.
"I think he's going to be good," the US president added.
Trump also said he does not know whether his personal involvement in the election campaign would have influenced the result, given that Vice President JD Vance traveled to Budapest instead of him.
"He (Orbán - ed.) was behind substantially. I wasn't that involved in this one. Viktor's a good man, though," Trump said.
This effectively became the first reaction of the US leader to Orbán's defeat in the parliamentary elections in Hungary.
Elections in Hungary
Over the past six months, the US president repeatedly publicly expressed support for Viktor Orbán and promised Hungary economic prosperity in the event of a victory by the Fidesz party.
In addition, ahead of the elections, US Vice President JD Vance visited Budapest, where he held a meeting with Orbán.
At the same time, in the parliamentary elections in Hungary, the opposition Tisza party led by Péter Magyar won.
Earlier, journalists had already asked Trump what he thought about the voting results, but he refrained from commenting, and his reaction was captured on video.
