The Kremlin has revealed new details of a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin on September 8. Trump promised "impressive and far-reaching prospects" for trade between the US and Russia in exchange for a swift end to the war, according to Reuters.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov says Trump emphasized that ending the war as quickly as possible would open up "impressive and far-reaching" prospects for the full restoration of US-Russia relations. This applies particularly to trade and economic ties, which promise "enormous benefits" for both countries.
Putin supported this approach. Ushakov adds that he can not disclose the details of the conversation but described it as constructive—the leaders agreed to stay in touch and call each other again if necessary.
The visit by US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv on the eve of the call did not lead to any public breakthrough, although it raised the possibility of resuming trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US. However, in its report on the conversation between Putin and Trump, the Kremlin did not mention this possibility.
According to a source close to the Kremlin, Putin still intends to establish full control over the rest of the Donetsk region.

On Saturday, September 5, the Americans met with Putin in Moscow. During the talks, the Kremlin leader, as always, spoke of Russia's alleged successes on the front lines and emphasized that he sought to achieve his military objectives. In response, the Americans presented their own ideas for resolving the war.
The very next day, September 6, Witkoff and Kushner visited Kyiv for the first time and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the Ukrainian leader, the American officials presented several very promising ideas for a peaceful resolution.
