Russian leader Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call today, September 8, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said, RIA Novosti reports.

According to Ushakov, Trump and Putin spoke for exactly one hour. He said the conversation was "constructive and very frank."

The Russian leader’s aide added that during the call, the two sides exchanged views on the visits by US presidential special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Kyiv and Moscow.

"The results of the aforementioned US envoys’ visits were viewed positively. Work through this channel, as well as through some other channels, will continue," he added.

Ushakov claims that Trump stressed the need to bring Russia’s war against Ukraine to an end as soon as possible. This would open up “significant prospects" for cooperation between Moscow and Washington.

"Donald Trump is interested in achieving a breakthrough during his presidency," Ushakov said.

Putin, in turn, presented his "assessment" of the situation on the battlefield to Trump and outlined Russia’s military objectives. He also sought to convince the US leader that Moscow has "no aggressive plans against Europe whatsoever."

According to the Kremlin aide, the United States and Russia agreed to continue working on humanitarian issues, including prisoner exchanges.
