US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed Washington's new tariff policy but signaled his willingness to engage in dialogue with countries seeking more favorable trade terms, according to remarks made by the US President.

The US President emphasized that Washington has introduced permanent tariffs on other countries but did not rule out the possibility of individual negotiations with each nation.

"They can both be true. There could be permanent tariffs and there could also be negotiations... we're going to get fair deals and good deals with every country — and if we don't, we're going to have nothing to do with them," Trump said during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump's trade war

On April 2, US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on key American trading partners, a move set to impact trade worth trillions of dollars.

The new measures include a 34% tariff on imports from China, which took effect immediately. In response, Beijing announced it would impose its own 34% tariffs on US imports starting April 10.

Trump countered this by unveiling a 50% tariff on Chinese goods, which was set to take effect on April 9.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington is prepared to enter negotiations on the new tariffs with more than 50 countries.

Meanwhile, the European Union is planning to introduce retaliatory measures on aluminum and steel imports from April 15 in response to the US tariffs.
